If a piece is to be painted and not stained then the surface is covered with an oil-based primer. The goal of painting is to enhance to beauty of the wood carving.
I paint in artists oils. These allow for superior control to achieve subtle blending and visual effects like dappling.
Sometimes I use bronzing powders for a subtle effect of gold and silver.
Sometimes gold and silver leaf are just the thing, especially on an Illions horse. These can be enhanced with colored glazes on top.
At the end the piece is coated with 2 coats of varnish to protect the painted surface.

Sometimes a piece will come in that has original paint on it, often concealed by many layers of park paint.

The park paint is carefully removed layer by layer with a small scalpel-like blade. When all the original paint is revealed, it is protected with a coat of removable varnish. Areas where the paint is missing are “in-painted”, or painted in with conservator’s paints, that dry exactly the same color.

John Hughes does wood restoration for me. John has an MA in Sculpture and a BA in Art with a minor in Woodworking Technology, and has taught wood sculpture at West Valley College. He has a meticulous eye for detail and carefully distinguishes the original carving marks from the general wear and tear . If my work looks good it is primarily because of the beautiful surface I have to work on. It is my great pleasure and good fortune to have made the connection with John, an honest artisan and highly skilled craftsman and artist. (Plus, he tells the worst puns!)

Contact John at 408.227.4388. He will gladly answer any restoration questions.
